I am so lost and I feel very silly and stupid emailing people about stuff I should already have a handle on. It’s embarrassing and horrible. I know what I’m doing, I wish I had the piece of paper to prove it.
And wow, everyone on that thread is really lighting him up, calling him a retard. It’s people like you he’s probably bothered by. I know it’s people who use that as an insult that bother ME.
Instead of trying to educate this guy, or approach him with an open mind/heart, you openly ridicule his ignorance? For all I know, his nephew is 12 years old and uses music to seclude himself. Rebellious teenagers don’t act a certain way because of screamo, their behavior is their own. Most people on that thread are even further reinforcing his disdain of a subculture he (most likely) knows nothing about.
I am in a “screamo” band, but that in itself has no definition of character/behavior of its participants. I am a working class woman in my mid twenties. I am a non-traditional student, pursuing my masters in special education. I have tattoos and a heart for helping children grow. I am not rebelling against my parents, locking myself in my room, or carrying on in any unsuitable manner. I take my grandparents to their doctor appointments and I play boardgames with my friends. Who are you to judge?
My taste in music does not define my behavior, does yours? I totally see that it could motivate you to take some political or social action, but I’ve never heard a song at a vfw concert that sent the devil home with me. I’m really ashamed of how this could have been an “lol, how silly of him!” situation (I tried to make light of something that was said), but I really shouldn’t participate. He has NO idea how many notifications are coming his way from this “event” and quite frankly, while he is being ~super ignorant~ I think harassing him via FB is pretty lame.
While he obviously has no interest in bonding with his nephew, actually fixing any sort of problem, or becoming an educated individual, lay off. Don’t you have something better to do? You’re only proving his point that “screamo” causes bad behavior. Calling him a retard is in poor taste. Did you ever consider that he might be delayed? Or a stroke victim? Maybe I shouldn’t have made a crack about his comments about straightedge, now that I think of it.. because I really have no idea. I’ve worked with innumerable students with cognitive delays that will assert that they are “right” when logic, science, whatever beg otherwise. I’m going to graduate from college and get a job as a teacher.
Then, I’m going to buy an old factory or store and convert it into a venue/practice spaces with a separate living quarters. I will spend my summers doing most of the work myself, and have the satisfaction of a job well done.
I will let my home generate a portion of my income and I will be happy.
That’s the 5 yr plan.
Marriages/wisdom teeth extraction/other expenses will be addressed when they prove unavoidable :oP
